what dose "piece-wise measurement "mean?

i see it in a paper.it reads "piese-wise measurement is applied when a signal is too large to be measured by a sensitive circuit with a limited dynamic rande"

who can give more details?

I think it is referring to making different measurements and 'piecing' the result together to plot a final result. So, for example, if you wanted to plot a characteristic which went from 0V to 5V, with something with a 1V range you would measure 0V to 1V then 1V to 2V etc and piece the results together.
