i hope therez one more meaning for MAC related to DSP domain. Here it refers to Multiply Accumulate.
Even wrt FPGAs also, this is relevant since, present days FPGAs comes with MAC engines.
Thatz it has a multiplier and then the o/p fed to an adder and registers, this whole thing in a single core as MAC.
Its one of the sublayer in the osi's data link layer,
Data Link layer is divided into two sub layers--The MAC layer and The LLC Layer(logic link layer).
Mac layer are used in wired as well as wireless networking, whereever u use the OSI model u will be using the MAC layer, only thing is that some different protocols use different names to identify the MAC layer
