What diode should I use?

My father-in-law has an old soldering unit in his garage and he blew 2 diodes on the electronic board. I'm trying to find some replacement parts.

Here you can see a photo I took of the board.

I know the part number for the diode "A" is 1N4004 but I can't find the part number for the bigger diode "B". And there's no other diode of the same size on the board.

Any idea what diode I could use as a replacement for diode "B"? If you need any more info please let me know!

Use any diode of IN54XX series (may be IN5408).

Even given the fact that the bigger diode burned, you think that a smaller 1N4004 would be fine?

it will still work but if you can get the 1N5408 it will be fine ..

The bigger diode has a number on it, some digits can't be seen in the photograph. If you can tell us what they are we can find it's ratings and suggest an alternative. I certainly wouldn't replace one with a 1N4004 and before doing anything else I would find out why the damage was cause in the first place.

The even bigger diode on the left has "P60" and "8209" written on it. How could I find out why the damage was caused?

I would try and find out why the diode has burnt out like that?

have you tested the transistor affixed to the heatsink?

Desolder it, identify it and find out how to test it by asking mr Google.
