What are LCD Display Drivers & LCD Display Controllers? What are their applications?

I have used graphic and alphanumeric LCDs. I have come across LCD Display Drivers & LCD Display Controllers ICs. When are they needed and what do they do?

How you program the graphic and alphanumeric LCDs.
Internally the display contains blocks and each block contains pixels, the pixels can be 5x7.

So we need to enable those pixels in order to display a character.

For example S
so you need to make enable the pixels in s order..

To enable pixels, it is difficult to write the program for the micro controller and memory is not sufficient.
Here LCD ICs came into picture.
It is the medium between the uc and the display.
so you send a character a to the LCD IC, that will convert into the pixels, the IC should be programmed like that.
