Pls I need help in designing a water level indicator in a tank that will display the level of water in the tank preferably with 7 segment and switch off the pumping machine when the tank is filled.

If you really want to get all levels between low and high then you probably need capacitive slider - depend on the level in the tank you'll get different measured signals. Atmel offers some ready to use capacitive sliders like QT511, but by loading QTouch library in your project you can turn any Atmel uP into capacitive sensor. The mechanical design of the sensor for sure will require to insulate properly the electrodes from the liquid in the tank - capacitive sensors are very vulnerable to leackages.

Depending on the size of the tank (not more than 150 liters), i would think in some sensor that detects weight, and then with a microcontroller, read from that sensor and make a graph with the valors given by the sensor, then it's just programming. It's just an idea, but as i said, it depends on the size of the tank.
