VCO(voltage controlled oscillator) is a voltage to frequency converter.
in PLL the output of phase detector i.e. the dc voltage proportional to the frequency difference is applied to VCO. VCO changes its own frequency to generate same frequency same as that of input slg. frequency. so that error voltage is zero.

LC for high frequency, low phase noise VCO, ring for large tuning range

If you like to have large tuning range as well as small area use Ring Oscillator
if you need high purity use LC

lc vco =q high,area large,high frequency design
ring= small area ,easier to design, preferred for low freq,q low

- ring VCO: small area , poor phase noise , suitable for applications that require relaxed phase noise requirements mainly wired applications

- LC VCO : bigger area , better phase noise , suitable for applications with tough phase noise requirements like wireless applications
