I am fiddling with some direct conversion receivers. My question is this: I want a try using a Tayloe detector. For this I obviously need a vfo. Most of the designs I have seen use a DDS to achive high resolution tuning, but I was wondering if it wasnt possible to do it with some sort of fractional programmable divider or something, in an fpga maybe, since the Tayloe detector is nothing more than a analog mux driven by a square wave clock?
I hope this post make sense? - My digital electronics skills have taken a dive so I am hoping someone could put me on the right road
One more question though, OK so now I want to make a variable clock oscillator, so I guess one would either use a vcxo with some sort of PLL (I guess not a conventional one?) or run a high frequency clock and divide it down?
I have always just used a crystal on a specific frequency
What is the best method to get a high resolution variable clock?
