I am new into the ASIC industry.
Could any one tell about why do we use pads in integrated circuits and what are its types.
It would be better if a brief description about pads is provided.
Pads are used in the IC to give physical connections to the outside of IC. This is done via wire bonding process. The thin Cu/Gold wires used to provide the Connections from the circuit to the outer world. The connections we see outside an IC Package are the pads inside that package, and there are thin wires connected to each pin of an IC. These are via Pads.
Take the IC 7408 ( 2 input AND gate ) for example. So the pins projecting out are connected to pads which in turn are conected to the internal circuitry.Am I right?
And also do we use pads only to make the voltage adjustments inside and outside of IC or are there some other purposes too?
yes. that is correct understanding. The main purpose of Pads id to connect the circuit connections to physical connections. Since, ICs cannot be connected directly with wires. So, provide an external connections..
