For the MAX232 look in the data sheet, it shows examples.
The MAX 485 also has examples in the data sheet but note that it also needs direction control signals so if you are plannng on using it as a serial extender, bear in mind some extra circuits may be needed. If you simply want to run a very long and fast serial link, look at using MAX488 or MAX489 instead. They need an extra pair of wires for bidirectional data.
If it is only an output from the GPS you can tie the MAX485 it into transmit mode but it's a two-way link to your GPS you will need the extra direction control signals.
