To understand SPI interface protocol

Could anybody suggest what is the right way to understand SPI interface protocol? What are the things need to be considered if you have SPI in master mode or slave mode.

you could read some SPI-EEPROM, you will found the waveform.
you could extend their capabilities with a SQI protocol.

i've not got any good document which would give the detail waveform information, if you have any file could you please send it.
