Greetings to all you "bright sparks" I would like your thoughts on purchasing "grab bags" of components. Dealers like Jameco sell them at like $20.00 USD for 1000 pieces. The question is - are these weird non-salable morphodites that they bought as job lots and can't find a market for - or is this a good way to build up a nice collection of parts. Do you know of other vendors that offer similar products. Any words of wisdom, cautions or further direction will be appreciated. I teach medical students and they are forever wanting to build novel circuits.

Try getting one full of Intel 4004 microprocessors :).

If it is older stock you may have difficulties finding the datasheets. Sometimes it is difficult to identify components too.

eBay might have some selections of modern components available, it is worthwile getting selections of passive components such as resistors and capacitors. Sample kits from the likes of RS and Farnell can be quite expensive.
