Hello friends ,

I am using a thermal printer ...it runs well on SMPS .......IT requires 1.5 Amps while printing.....

When i try to run it using lm317 to generate the specified voltage 7V.it doesnt work......I tried to measure the current in this case ....it shows only around 300 mA.....

what i figured out is that smps was able to provide full current 1.5Amps while my regulator lm317 was not , though it is rated to provide around 1.5 Amps.....

Please suggest what to do ......how to run the printer using this regulator.....

Thanks and regards
Jitender....

Your Transformer should be of 1.5A and above if you want 1A. Regulator doesn't give 1A. If you want 1.5A output then choose your transformer which can provide 3A and regulator which can handle 3A So when you drive 1.5A it will be working at 50% load and the components will not heat. You can also use battery whose rating is > 2 or 3Ah.
