software for embedded design

i want to do embedded system designs using c++ i want reference from anyone can give which book i should refer which software i should prefer which provide plateform for this project (compiler for this) borland c++ is not supporting it functions are not defined in it which are used in embedded design tell me which hardware i should i purchase for test my drivers some one is suggesting that i should try turning on led by using embedded coding it is basic,plz guide me in whichslot of my pc or cpu i should connect the led plz suggest me appropriate software for this which provide right environment for it

Intel provides compilers (C++, Embedded etc..)for free and also paid version. check out their downloads section . i hope you get them.
