slots on the UWB antenna for frequency notches

hi

i found in some papers for UWB antenna design with slots for frequency notches
that the author represents the slot as a stub either parallel or series
i want to know when i can represent the slot model as parallel or series stubs??
when i can represent it as open or short stub??
and when i can design slots on the antenna with length of lambda/2 and when it has length of lambda/4???
