It is simple to do using the MSComm control. The only drawback
is that it only works with the professional/enterprise editions
of Visual Basic.

There is a freeware alternative to MSComm here:

If you will be working with the serial port, I highly recommend
the book Serial Port Complete by Jan Axelson. Money well spent.
