Sensor pixel for neural recording

I am wondering if instead of using a MicroElectrode Array (MEA) for neural recording, we can use some different circuits like: Voltage to frequency Converter or Digital sensors that are connected directly to the electrode
Ps: the array of electrodes have pitch around 10x10microm^2.
