There are ATA(HDD), ATAPI(CD,DVD,MO) devices So, if your device is trying to access CDROM - Spec over ATA/ATAPI-4 is required And, there are 3 kind of access timing PIO, (S)MDMA, UDMA Speed is also different... My suggestion is read ATA-2 spec first, that's enough for old HDD if you don't care speed.
