Wavelength is irrelevant other than consistency with the
detector. People also do passive window-vibration-optical
pickup, in order to not have a telltale illumination.
Go look at your photodiodes, any of them will have a
detection efficiency curve somewhere inthe datasheet
or app notes and most in the description at electronics
distributors.
About any silicon photodiode / phototransistor ought
to do, for raw sensitivity; optics, bandwidth, gain etc.
will vary. You might prefer a good-to-go photodetector
module.
If you are in a high clutter or solar illuminated setting,
a modulated laser and a synchronized AC-coupled
sampling detector would reject "DC" and out-of-band
optical inputs.
