please any help :

why in cdma(umts) we use rake receiver instead of equalizer like gsm ,also if there is simple explanation of rake receiver, please?

also ,is rake receiver based on assumption that there is no inter-symbol interference (i.e.no interference bet. pathes i.e. each path power reach receiver and finish before next path enter the receiver so that it can follow each path individually for path searcher)?
if that right what is the relation bet. that and delay bet. pathes that should be large than chip duration and small than bit duration ?
