Hi,
Warp 13a from Newfound electronics would have fitted your bill. It is truely Mplab compatible. But would not know if it is being sold anymore
Mplab recognises warp13 as picstart plus. I have been using this without any problems.
Pickit 2 is an alternative, It is a flash device programmer, but the range of chips currently supported is very limited. With enough time passed from its release, chip suppots are very slow in comming from Microchip
Icd2 is slightly higher end, with debugging features for selected chips. If you are planning to use more chips in future, this is a better option. But it has only ICSP connector. You will have to do the programming on breadboard or on your target board with a icd connection. The upgrade for newer chips is automatic with newer versions of Mplab, where newer chips will be supported.
