[PIC] Debugging with MPLAB X

I'm trying to debug a program on MPLAB X v6.50 XC8. I selected the simulator as the hardware tool. It compiles and assembles okay and when I select Debug > Debug Project. It does a debug compile and stops on the first instruction in the main but I don't get the debug toolbar.
