I've seen what can be the work of phd student in related areas ( to the phd proposed)

fundamental research is not a great part of the work...so few in fact. An dthe work they do is close to what company are doing sometimes.

So what's the point ?

 It's cheaper for a company to pay a Pdh student than a full-time engineer.

This cost issue is all the more important for small companies (typically start-ups)

They also may get a better efficiency. (Since phd student are dedicated to their work , are quite good students and can work for more than 8 hours a day for sure)

Anyway, if someone has no other options and have no experience....he can have a try.
