pc controlled digital potentiometer

Hi all,
I want to create an electronic board to provide some specific values of resistances particularly for testing purposes..
My requirements are resistances values ranging from

A)1.2Ohm,2 Ohm,3.2Ohm ,66Ohm all should be 5W or 10W ratings
B)1-20KOhm normal ones used in students labs with smaller current rating( 1/4W i think)

I think i should wire the first ones on the board separately and allow a multiplexer to select the lines for the load according to a user program in PC.Since i think 5-10W ratings resistors cant be fabricated in ICs im i true?

Can somebody suggest me a good IC for the second case?? n if any exist for the first case too..

Im comfortable with atmega8 series i suppose i can control Ics with that.

Shall i ve to use any separate calibration techniques to get exact resistances in this method??
Or if u can offer me a better design method kindly do so.

Thanks
Stephen.
