I was asked in an interview last week regarding the need of one-hot assignament technique and its advantage over binary assignment. latter i understood that binary coding will be synthesized into an binary adder whereas one-hot will be synthesized into shift registers. since there are no comb. bottleneck involved, one-hot can operate at a very high speed and preferred over binary assignment for coding FSM in high speed circuits.

One caution. During PNR one-hot technique is prone to Hold violations and hence needed to be documented properly and shared with backend guys.

hi sakthi,

nice information. one hot contains less combinational logic compared to binary FSM. so by using one-hot we can achieve more frequency.

keep posting more interview questions
