what's the steps to send or receive SMS or call ?

what 's the function of AT commands ?

but need block diagram of internal modue of GSM
and steps to send or receive SMS or call ? or the path of data flow to the BTS from sensor or external micro controller or BTS to GSM ... to external micro controller .

and how to use at commands to send sms or make a call ?
what's the parameter i need to initialize the code to prepare GSm to send a sms .?
