What would be a painless way to program multiple uC's before installing them on the PCB ? The PCB will not provide for ISP header, and this would be a small production run type of scenario - say 50 to 100 boards only.

The footprints are SOIC or SSOP.

Why am i not able to find this as a standard solution already published someplace ? Is it such an uncommon requirement ?

Make your small programming PCB for SOIC or SSOP solder uC, program uC, dessolder it and later solder uC on device PCB.

SOIC/SSOP is simple to solder dessolder, use hot air. One good SMD trained home user can program this 50 pieces for one night.

If there is not ISP header connector, check if there existing soldering points on PCB track. Standard ISP connector is very big, often are used small soldering points, for soldering wires direct.
