TVS cascading for high working voltage and low clamping

is it generally bad to use a plurality of MOVs or TVS diodes to conduct a devices clamping voltage as a solution to obtain high working/breakdown voltage with a low clamping voltage?

Many devices have their clamping and breakdown/working voltages very far making protecting low voltage devices combersome

What's wrong with a comparator/MOSFET solution or stacking ordinary diodes if possible?

For most applications calling for a MOV or TVS, the voltage is high or is AC so comparators are generally out of the question.

Although you can 'add' the voltage of MOVs in series together to make a higher voltage, the resulting clamp voltage is less defined because of the increased resistance when conducting and the rather unpredictable sharing of breakdown voltage. A single suitably rated device will work better than two or more in series but if there s no other option you can use them.

Series circuit of TVS diodes is pretty standard to achieve high voltage levels. But it doesn't improve the ratio of breakdown to clamping voltage.
