Microsystems

Dear All,

Do anybody know what is microsystems (MEMS)? Is it just like a technology that make the IC become small? :|

Kindest Regards,

FE

Yeah, I have opened it..but it is mainly about mechanical parts..does it has something to do with the electrical and electronics?

Yes it has some electrical parts and manufactured with processes similar to the IC industry.

Hi,
I.e. the most handys(mobiles) has an MEMs micro:), Airbag sensors are usual an MEMS accelerating sensor, in optical switching are often MEMs realays, RF Relay...
The so called "micro mirror projectors" are MEMs systems too.

So it is more mechanical thing with some electrical interface ? :) (If take the example from the accellerometer and the relay).

How about the 'more' electronics thing (like memory, processor, buffer) would it be possible to implement inside the MEMS? Or the MEMS and IC are two different domain?

How about System on Chip? Anybody ever heard this term? Is it the same as MEMS?

FE

Sorry, but as the name tells "MEMS" = Micro Electro Mechanical..:" also its it both at the same time:)...
Production technologies are full same as IC, its a special IC!:)
So can have lot of circuits on chip(co-existent), as "neighbor", inclusive own control logics & signal processing/uP...
SOC means = System On Chip; a complete system is integrated on an chip_originally uP, memory & ADC/DAC + eventually preamplifier..
K..

you can get more detail info of MEMS from the book "Introduction to Microelectromechanical System (MEMS) Engineering"
