I am starting some PIC development projects for ham radio and have over 30 years as an embedded/firmware development engineer in the Telecom world. But I have been "retired" for 8 years and am rusty at almost everything. I REALLY NEED a good tutorial on the MPLAB 8.5 development system. The Users Guides I downloaded from MicroChip are no help whatsoever. I have Googled and haven't found anything useful there either. Any suggestions? I also have a 30+ year of writing user and engineering docs. There were never any unanswered questions on what I wrote. Right now I need to build a project. I have started but when I get to assigning an assembler I can't find any details on what I should select from the list. Thanks for your help. I need specifics.

Re: MPLAB-IDE 8.5

Hi,

Welcome to the world of Microchip, where everything is there, just that its a case of finding it !

As to finding a manual detailing everything together in a way you want is even harder.

Many online hobbyist tutorials are written for the 16F range of chips but I find the 18F chips much easier to code in assembler and richer in hardware features.

There are many useful tutorials in Assembler on the Microchip site - here's an example https://ww1.microchip.com/downloads/en/devicedoc/spi.pdf
You will also find the Microchip forums very helpfull

As well as plenty of help on this forum have a look at this beginners sticky on the ET site which provides many starter tutorials - the WinPic Progne being good.

The only thing I would add to it is regarding the Pic chip programmer - simply delete most references to the old stuff and insert the Microchip Pickit2

Hope that is of some help in what you are looking for.
