Trying to get some applications support from a software
vendor, they want to do a WebEx but the problem is on
a Linux machine and WebEx support is dismal. Wasted
most of a day chasing and installing codecs, etc. only to
find that afterward WebEx still insists to run its Meeting
Center app, which can't be found for Linux. NetMeeting
is a no-go. VNC apps may need me to be more of a
sysadmin than I really am, and add risk when used on
a wide open network.

Are there any good cross-platform / platform-agnostic
screen sharing (and maybe remote keyboard / mouse
control?) applications of similar sort but less busted?
If no, is there a "best" VNC type program that maybe
even cleans up after itself (closing the ports, etc.)?

I've used UltraVNC in the past to administer Linux Servers from a Windows 7 system with good results:

UltraVNC Remote Access Tools

I've even used it to communicate with Raspberry Pi's, the best feature is it's free.

You might also consider TightVNC, which I have not personally used, but have heard good comments:

TightVNC Software

Best of luck in your endeavors,
