how to use adc in 18f452

yo i'm trying to interface a ADC with a uC to form the data aquisition part of a RTU. i kno some uC have built in ADC in them but i was wondering which would be easier to program; an external adc or a internal adc. now i am a beginner at this sort of design so please feel free to share any info. thanks...
Also, the data then needs to be transfered to a control room via GPRS. Any ideas of how to do this?
