increasing number of input/output pins in atmega 16

atmega input output pins

i am newbie doing a project in atmega16.
I want to know is it possible to increase the number of input/output pins in atmega 16?
if possible how can it be done?

pcf8574 atmega

what exactly do you want to do, there are many ways of doing it. 74595 is oe of them used to increase no. of outputs. give some details
 

atmega169 input/output

you can use one or more pcf8574 which is an i2c 8 bits port expander
