I try successfully 10 m of cable in I2cbus @ 100KHz.
For I2cBus there is a bidirectional buffer for decreasing source impedence of a factor 10.
You can increase the cable length by using current source instead of a simple resistor... if the current source is let say 2 mA you can use a cable much longer than would be possible if you use a resistor with the same current.
use a good shielded cable and buffers if possible.
