i/o port expansion in microcontrollers

hi people
can anyone tell me how to expand the i/o port...
i mean i hav a small number of pins left and i hav to use more...
 

One option is to use Microchip MCP23017 16-Bit I/O Expander with Serial Interface.
See its data sheet details.
