How to protect IC from the heat in circuits?

how we can protect the ICs from the heat?in the circuits?

place it on a ic holder and take care that it has some air flow... basically every ic would be having lot of power dissipation....

If you design this ic, add thermal protection circuit, if the chip is too hot, shutdown it.
