how to make 12v 2amp to 6v 1amp dc power supply

I have stepper motor having rating 6v 1A and 1.8 deg.
But i have 12v 3 amp transformer can any one tell me how to make it from 12v to 6v 1a.
 

No need to convert you can drive the motor with 12v supply. But you need to use a chopper.

A nice easy non efficient way would be to use a 7806 regulator, dont forget a heatsink for 1 amp.

i tried but it is getting very hot.

what to do next?
 

nandu actually i have connected it directly as common to +ve and all others to mosfet drain. Am planning to use LM350k regulator bcz in data sheet they given it will give up to 3amp out put.
