how to extract dc coefficient?

hi..could you tell me more information about dct coefficient?
anyway,i have 256x256pixels and i divide it into 8x8block.then how to extract the dc coefficients from each block?after all how to put it back on 256x256array.could it work?:roll:
i hope you give me source code in matlab.
