how to design a pattern generator on chip?

I want to design a pattern generator on chip, so that i dont need to buy a pattern generator. i have a signal generator already.

is there anyone having the experience or reference book name talking about designing such circuit? thanks.
 

random pattern?? -> use LFSR (linear feedback shift register)
