SD card can work on its own protocol, which is very similar to MMC card protocol.
Also it can work with SPI, which is of interest , when you use microcontrollers.

I know it is a while since any activity on this thread but i couldnt resist pointing you to the main source for SD memorycard information. This can be found at SD card org.
Look for "Aboute SD memory card" on the menu and the link to the physical layer spec. on the site that pops up. It will give you the latest version at any time.
