Horizontal AND vertical prong? What can be attached to these?

Bought this pump and am going to be wiring it up to a transformer so I can plug it into the wall, but I was wondering why there are prongs like this at the end of the wires with plastic casing around them? What are these called and what can be attached to them?

It's just an arbitrary connector somebody picked, probably
this was originally a component for some larger system
where it made sense and now it's overstock on the Internet
bazaar. You could replace it with some other connector
type (crimp connectors from AMP, Molex, et al) or just
solder it up, whatever you want. If you go to some place
like Digi-Key (or any major electronoic distributor) you can
waste a day poring over connectors. Probably the single
largest category.

Huh, weird. I think I'll just cut it off, throw it away, solder the wires together, then wrap it up in electrical tape.
