Help needed with Driver Programming!

Hi all,
I am new to device driver programming and I actually want to write drivers for HDMI. I started by looking in to some existing code and found out that in almost all the drivers, structures are used but I am not able to figure out how exactly we make use of structures in device drivers? Plz help me
