help me with vhdl programing in a project!

I have a project that includes spartan 3e picoblaze and digital termo senzor.

I need to build device that will conect pico with termosenzor. I have a problem with vhdl programing.
Should I use three state machine? And how to bild that machine to wait for some period of time that it can read signals from termosenzor?

I am new aorund picoblazes and every help is need it.
