Help me, design a University network

Hi, all!

I have to do a project about designing a network for a University. Can you give me some advice? Better if you can give me some documents for references.

It will need wired ethernet in some places. Wireless in others.

It will need the kind of routers than prevent incoming viruses, efforts by students to change their grades, etc.

Outsiders must be limited as to what they can access.

Internet. There is VPN. Virtual private network.

Instructors will want their own private network so their students can read course outlines, find out their test scores, etc.

It may need a central location consisting of junction-related equipment. Not sure what degree of centralization is needed because most of the equipment will be scattered around campus in the form of hubs, switches, routers, dsl modems, cable modems, etc.

A whole lot of stuff will need to backed up. Including:

* Essential software and drivers for running the network

* The university website

* List of authorized users and passwords

* People will expect you to back up their stuff even though such things are not specifically your responsibility, nevertheless they came about because your network made them possible, and therefore people have come to depend on your network, and you'll be blamed if their things are lost, since they never got around to making backups.

You need a server to control the network and manage the clients. So your choice is Windows (SBS server 2008/11 for up to 75 clients) or separate components of a server system. Linux may be an option but that requires some experience. Presumably your project needs some hardware? There's enough complexity needed to build from standard component available now rather than a concept system.

And about the documents. you can read the courses of Cisco

many valuable suggestions have already been given.

here is mine:

linux is the recommended os for univ server.
you will have reduced maintanence works as it grows.

have three server machines for:
1.to get to internet outside
2.for maintaining staff and student related mail and stuffs and
3.an intranet for office related ones(info to students and all announcements)

so that even if one goes off you will have other two running and keeping univ students happy.

never connect exam related pcs to these servers. let it be separate with firewall.
firewall for the internet server also.

all server machines to be selected with suitable hardware for server load.
