Best choise is mcu extended with in circuit debugging schemas.i.e PIC flash based with ICD(in circuit debugging)-debug over two pins,Zilog eZ8-debug over 1 pin,Atmel. With that you can do debugging in real time in real your schema.

i from pakistan
i have worked on atmel
they are fine and having 4,8,20 k byte flash normally
maximum clock 24 mhz but in any case plz check iternal division clock
as in atmel external oscilater clock is divided by 12
it mean execution clock or machine cycles r 2 mhz
in pic iternal division is by 4
