It maybe good chance to "change horses" (read: select a CPU family) as I think there are out there ready-to-go projects based on PICs or 51-family..
These project may come with source code and this will save you a lot of time (unless you are "fluent" in, say, C language, and C has this good thing that it can be used with almost every CPU family)..
Well, unless someone did it before....with ATMEGA8...
