Mosfet Driving

Hey all,

I am trying to find information about "half bridge" MOSFET drivers, such as the L6390 (http://www.flexiusb.com/stonline/products/literature/anp/14589.htm). I am working on a solar project where I want to control the on time of some power mosfets (probably IRF9Z24) which will need to be switched on and off in the 20-40kHz range. I'm using an Arduino, and from some other project information I found (http://www.timnolan.com/uploads/Arduino Solar/ArduinoSolar.pdf) it looks like such a device exists to do it, a "half bridge MOSFET driver". I don't understand really how the device works though, and if there is a way to do what I want to do with discrete components.

Basically, I want to send a signal from the Arduino that varies the on-time of the MOSFETS to allow for Maximum Power Point tracking between a solar panel and a battery.

If anyone has any information on what half-bridge MOSFET drivers are, exactly, or how to choose a particular one, let me know. I am thinking of ordering the L6390.
