Does anyone know how these work? I am referring to those lcd (or led or plasma?) displays along highways.. Is it just a simple PC with a very large display?
It is not necessary to keep a PC for all kinds applications. Depending on the applications, either PC or there are some intelligent devices called Controllers from Motorola, Texas Instruments, analog Devices and low end Power PC series also used.
