doubt about mobile phones antenna

hi all i want to know why previously mobile phones used to have antennas present outside..while now we couldnt find a mobile phone like that..is there any technical reason for this?

drop test (intentionality or un-intentional) while antenna is outside then this key element( Antenna) will suffer either degradation in performance and/or complete loss.

Hence having antenna inside of the protected plastic cover will suppress such damage to some extent.

Now antenna is housed inside the phone cover.
