For beginers a very good starting point is the **broken link removed**
it has very good tutorial for moving sign display. although it only has 5X7 single character display. it uses PIC16F84 but can be replaced with a simple design using a 8051.

I need to do a 2 lines display 5x7 with 5 modules on the line and the text displayed on each line must be different.it will be better if the microC will be Atmel.the text must be introduced by IRDA or RS232 and text must scroll from right to left,just Caps and numbers.It's a school project and must be made practical not just on paper.Please excuse my bad english thank you.

I am also making a moving message display, but the problem i am facing is that ligh intensity of LEDs is very low due to fast scanning, how to solve this thing.
