Acoustic Modem

We are working for the development of Acoustic Modem.
Currently we are doing matlab simulatin of Communication System and Channel etc.
We are planning to implement the simulated techniques on SDR platform also.
Can anybody give me help like..

1. Suggest good books
2. Simulation model,methodology,tips
3. SDR Dev Kits
3. Which are the std modulations,Coding,Equalisers used in this kind of systems
4. How underwater channel in modeled
5. What are typical bw and data rate range we can expect
6. What should be my minimum SNR at receiver
7. What are the things to be taken care while designing a communication system from scratch?
and other issues like this which is not mentioned here.

If anybody else is working in this area we can have fruitful discussions.

Anyway thank u very much
In this process of building modem I want to study a general communication system
also .So we adopted a broad startegy of simulating all communication techniques in
matlab and generic design strategy using SDR platform.
So I require general information also.
